The First Computer Musician

New York Times editorial, 2011

In April of 2011 Max Mathews, the father of computer music, passed away at the age of 84. The New York Times’ online editorial desk commissioned an article from me meditating on his life and legacy. Doing research for the piece, I conducted two-dozen phone interviews with his former collaborators, colleagues, and friends, constructing a portrait of a man whose work was unparalleled in impacting how we produce and consume music today.
